We’ve been using Wippien as a VPN client to play some LAN games online.
A while back I made a video about how to install Wippien. It’s about 8 minutes long and goes through all the steps needed to install and configure Wippien.
Note: We’ve since stopped using “jabber.org” IDs and instead started using “wippien.com” IDs.
Unfortunately some of my “smarter” friends apparently don’t have the time to watch the video (and/or are otherwise getting senile so they forget to do this on their new PCs) so I wanted to reiterate the important configuration steps we found were required to have Wippien work properly.
Wippien is a bit flaky at times, and we’ve had some connection issues with it.
However, if you’ve installed Wippien (and didn’t follow the directions in my video) and are consistently having some problems seeing games hosted on your Wippien VPN (or can’t host games your friends on the VPN can see) you should try the following (even the author of Wippien doesn’t understand why this is necessary).
(The following configuration begins at about 2:54 in my video.)
In Windows XP, right click on My Network Places and select Properties.
In the Network Connections window right click on the Wippien connection and select Properties.
In the Wippien Properties window, General tab, scroll down in the list in the middle to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), highlight it, and click on the Properties button.
In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window click on the advanced button.
In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window, uncheck the Automatic Metric box near the bottom, and type 1500 into the Interface metric box.
Then under the Default gateways section click on the Add button.
In the TCP/IP Gateway Address type 5.0.0.1 and click the Add button (Leave the Automatic metric box in this window checked).
Close all the windows you had open by clicking on the OK or Close buttons.
Then go to the Start button, and type “cmd” into the Open line and hit enter key (or click on OK). This will open a command window.
At the command prompt in the command window type “route -f” (don’t include the quotes) and hit enter. This will clear your Windows routing tables (which will also will disconnect any network connections you have).
Then close the command window by typing “exit” or simply close the window.
Reboot your PC.
This should help you more constently see, connect and host games on your Wippien VPN.
If you’re having other problems with Wippien, check out the forums at Wippien.com.
Love this guide u made, works every time in windows xp
no way i could of set it up without your guide. Thanks
Btw could u make a windows 7 guide for setting up wippien – Ive tried basically same steps like xp but it never seems to work on windows 7 plus every things so different on there – don’t think that’s helping either. I would deeply deeply appreciate it if you could
thanks again for the xp guide
There are some network and security issues in Windows 7 that makes Wippien configuration much more difficult. I’d like to mess around with it but haven’t gotten a chance to yet.
If I do figure out a sure-fire configuration scheme for Windows 7 I’ll put it here.
Your Guide was amazing.. I really hope you can find time to mess around with windows 7 and see what you can make of installing this on windows 7. Just throwing that out there. Thanks!
